Chapter 6
Hunter
My half-ton pickup fishtails around on the snow-covered highway as I make my way into town, foot heavy on the gas pedal. I’m reminded of the Christmas James and I were thirteen, and our dad asked if one of us wanted to drive on the way to pick our grandma up for church. We were in the midst of a full-blown blizzard with at least three feet of snow built up in some spots. Can’t say the memory doesn’t hurt, and not only because our parents are both gone. The whole damn family has gone their separate ways, making this my first solo Christmas. I was more than happy to get the hell off the farm with Asher’s invite to drink beer and watch the game.
I’m not surprised to find town deserted. The roads haven’t been plowed yet as the snow’s still falling, and everyone’s probably content staying inside to open presents with their families. It’s another painful reminder that I won’t be seeing my nieces and nephew since they’re in California, Vegas, and New York. Everyone knows my winters are pretty flexible, yet I didn’t get an invite to spend the holidays with a single one of them.
In front of Asher’s little one-bedroom house, I park beside a few other cars I don’t recognize. Great. I thought this was going to be a laid-back kind of thing, just the two of us, without any bullshit. Grumbling under my breath, I take a pull of peppermint schnapps from the flask in my winter coat.
Too often I wish that I didn’t feel obligated to run the family farm. Most days, however, I love the hard labor that comes with it, and I’m proud of myself for carrying on Dad’s legacy. He was a second generation farmer, having taken over less than five years before our grandfather died of a massive heart attack. We all knew that one day Grandpa Anton would work himself to death, and I’m certain Dad would’ve suffered the same fate if our greedy fuck of an uncle hadn’t murdered him.
Makes me question what the hell I’m doing with my life. Without a family of my own, what the hell is the point of busting my ass? So I can afford a bigger flat screen? Take trips around the world by myself? Visit my siblings to be reminded that my life is empty as shit?
I nearly jump out of my damn skin when someone pounds on my window. My cousin, Levi, stands beside the truck in a black leather jacket and a wool beanie peppered with snowflakes. He’s flashing a wide grin that shows off blindingly white teeth. It’s weird seeing him in something other than coveralls and a worn baseball cap since we spent countless hours together during harvest. The asshole actually cleans up pretty well.
Being business partners with Levi was hard the first few months, until I realized he was more mortified than the rest of us that his dad was capable of stabbing his own brother to death.
